Are You Ready For Archie: The Musical?

Last year, the troubled production of Spider-Man: Turn off the Dark came to an end on Broadway. But now there’s another comic book superstar looking to conquer Broadway. And it’s… Archie Andrews?!

It’s true. Funny or Die may be producing the Archie Broadway musical, but it’s no joke. Archie Comics has officially announced Ant-Man co-screenwriter Adam McKay is slated to write the book (script) for the Archie musical alongside a currently unannounced creative team that will bring the misadventures of Riverdale’s eternal teenagers to the stage.

“Archie represents a bygone era of America,” said McKay in a statement. “And like all bygone eras, there are elements we miss and elements that should be bygone. This will be a musical that deals with both those realities in a bright, colorful and slightly demented way.”

Archie Publisher Jon Goldwater added “We couldn’t be more excited to partner with Adam McKay and Funny Or Die to finally bring Archie to the stage. We’ve always thought that Archie was destined to be a big Broadway star – and now that moment has come! I’ve long admired Adam’s work and the pairing of Archie’s world with his brilliant humor and sensibility is the perfect fit. We look forward to developing this project together with this incredible team.”

Dates for a New York run of the Archie musical will announced at a later date. This news follows an aggressive multimedia push by Archie Comics which has included a new line of horror comics, a relaunch of the core Archie title (pictured above), and Riverdale, an Archie inspired TV series that was previously in development at Fox before The CW added it to its slate of potential shows.
