Apple’s Next Major Project Could Be a Smart Ring

Apple has filed a patent for a smart ring, revealing that the company is looking to expand its product lines in the wearables market following the success of the Apple Watch.

Though information is light on the ground aside from a few diagrams revealing what the device could potentially look like, the patent reveals that it would boast a touchscreen along with a microphone that would be integrated with voice recognition software (most likely Siri).

With the touchscreen of the smart ring inevitably being smaller than those featured on Apple’s other devices, the company illustrates a feature that would allow the device to be controlled using hand motions, along with a built-in motion sensor that could link to a computer processor of an external device that could accurately detect handwriting. This could therefore make way for a device that essentially serves as a conduit for other devices, which is an area that smart rings have predominantly focused on in the past.

According to the patent, the smart ring is intended to be paired with “at least one other electronic device,” meaning that it would presumably be sold as a companion to the iPhone.

Two versions of the smart ring are featured in the patent, with one featuring a touchscreen with a display similar to the face of the Apple Watch, while the other features a more simplistic touch pad without a display.

Of course, just because Apple has filed a patent for the smart ring doesn’t mean that it’ll ever see the light of day. Most major tech corporations file plenty of patents when they have an idea they don’t want their competitors to get their hands on first, so Apple may not be working on bringing the ring to consumers at any point in the near future. However, given their surprising level of success with the Apple Watch, they are right to look into further avenues in the wearables market, and putting an Apple device in the homes, pockets, wrists and fingers of the public will certainly be an appealing prospect for them.
