Josh Hartnett Claims He Missed Out ‘Brokeback Mountain’ Kiss With Joaquin Phoenix, Forgetting Every Movie Gets a Remake

It’s hard to imagine Brokeback Mountain – the rugged, tense, surprisingly romantic drama about two closeted gay men who find love in the wild together – starring anyone but Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal. But apparently, two other leads were once being considered for their roles.

Josh Hartnett recently revealed to News.com.au that he was in the running, as was Joaquin Phoenix, for the star-crossed cowboy-lover roles of Ennis Del Mar and Jack Twist in the 2005 Ang Lee film. But Hartnett opted to film the 2006 drama The Black Dahlia instead – a decision he wishes he could reverse (and not just because nobody saw The Black Dahlia while Brokeback Mountain won several Oscars and Golden Globes).

“I’ve always wanted to kiss Joaquin,” Hartnett confessed during the Aussie outlet’s interview. “So that’s my biggest regret.”

Given the entertainment industry’s proclivity for remaking and rebooting everything to death, we say there’s still a chance that an onscreen smooch between the Pearl Harbor star and the Joker could totally happen. Who do we have to call in Hollywood to get that ball rolling?
