78-Year-Old Keith Richards Says He Has ‘More Stamina’ Since Quitting Smoking, Wait Is He Talking About Playing Music?

It’s never too late to be good to your lungs. That seems to be the message Keith Richards is sharing with his many fans. The 78-year-old Rolling Stones guitarist recently told CBS Sunday Morning that he’s given up cigarettes after 55 years! Quitting took two years and a lot of nicotine patches.

“It’s funny, I don’t think about it much anymore… Sometimes, you know, a bell rings and something inside says, ‘Hey pal, enough.’ I just put the hammer on it,” he said. “Luckily, I don’t miss it, and that makes me feel good. Until I started rehearsing for the tour last August, and then I realized that I had 10 times more wind.”

Um…does that sound like a farting reference to anyone else? Maybe don’t talk about your wind anymore, Keith.

Seriously, though, we’re proud of the guy for kicking cigs. And it sounds like his discipline is paying off in other ways as well. On the WTF with Marc Maron podcast, Richards reported that he has “a lot more air in the lungs and in the voice, more stamina.”

Thank goodness we’re only talking about music. (We are only talking about music, right?)

Richards was once known as quite the party boy, so we wouldn’t put anything past him, even as a septuagenarian. This is the same dude who once bragged about snorting his dad’s ashes mixed with cocaine. He stopped that drug in 2006, and gave up alcohol sometime around 2017.

While it may seem he has no guilty pleasures left, Harris is still living the dream of a rock ‘n’ roll icon and pursuing his passion for making music. The Stones embark on a 60th-anniversary tour in Europe this summer – and we can’t wait to see this so-called renewed stamina onstage. (But only if we’re talking about music.)
