In the latest edition of Honest Movie Reviews, we’re pulling together the funniest audience movie reviews on the internet. From funny to ironic, truthful to the downright silly, we’re diving into the deep, dark rabbit hole of online movie fandom. Today, we turn our attention to Jurassic World: Dominion.
As one of summer 2022’s most anticipated movies, Dominion also happens to be one of its biggest letdowns. If you are somehow unaware, Dominion is billed as “the epic conclusion of the Jurassic Era.” Aside from being the final film in the Jurassic World trilogy, the movie also attempts to wrap up the series as a whole. In a blatant attempt to repeat the success of something like X-Men: Days of Future Past, the film brings together the new and original cast for one final grand adventure.
Originally scheduled for release in 2021, Dominion was one of the many major productions affected by the initial wave of the COVID-19 pandemic. As it turns out, the movie was also one of the first major blockbusters that resumed filming in July 2020. According to reports, the additional COVID protocols required to restart production added an additional $5 million to the budget. While the filming was eventually completed in 2020, the release date was pushed back to June of this year.
As of this writing, Dominion has earned a respectable $145 million on its opening weekend and its current worldwide total sits at $438 million. It isn’t fair to call Dominion a disappointment. But considering the tough marketplace, it’s highly unlikely that it will do better than its predecessors. However, the more pressing issue for Dominion’s box office returns is that the film has been panned by both critics and audiences.
Dominion currently holds a 30 percent critical rating, which is by far the lowest of any movie in the franchise thus far. But as the users of the platform Letterboxd.com make us astutely aware, Dominion might be the second-worst thing to ever happen to dinosaurs.
