Describing themselves as ‘Sydney’s premier punk outfit’ These New South Wales have just released their own six part web series documenting their trials and tribulations trying to find success in Sydney’s Inner West music scene.
With guest appearances by the likes of Kirin J Callinan, Johnny Took from DMAs and Palms‘ Alex Grigg, the series pulls no punches in showing the warts and all underbelly of Sydney’s music scene refracted through the prism that is These New South Wales.
A demented hybrid of The Office, This Is Spinal Tap and Kath & Kim (although this one is more inner west than western suburbs) These New South Wales are hilarious in their lead role as the clinically deluded band “on the rise”.
Full of desperate attempts to get attention and fame, partial male nudity and uncensored Aussie accents galore, this series is a lot of fun yet also underscores a lot of sad truths about trying to make it in music. A must see for any would be punk rockers out there, it does warrant mentioning that this is satire and best not emulated. That’s right kids, don’t try this at home.
Announcing the release of the series on triple j this morning, with hosts Matt and Alex even donning the group’s trademark nipple duct tape, the band have been a getting a lot of attention for the series, especially considering that much like their on-screen alter-egos, the band aren’t exactly that famous.
Still if they can convince more nationally syndicated radio hosts to get their kit off and tape up, they might be in with a chance. Can you imagine the viral sensation (the medical kind I’m sure) that seeing Kyle Sandilands in such a get up would cause?
