“Now this is podracing!” said absolutely no one in this Star Wars comic. But Marvel Comics is taking fans back to Tatooine, the homeworld of Luke Skywalker in Star Wars # 15. Normally, this comic book series takes place just after the first Star Wars movie, but this issue is a flashback story from the recently recovered journal of Ben Kenobi during his exile on Tatooine.
When watching the original Star Wars, it’s clear that Luke has some knowledge about the man formerly known as Obi-Wan Kenobi, but it’s less clear why Ben didn’t play a larger role in Luke’s life when he was growing up. According to Marvel, Star Wars # 15 is going to address why Owen Lars forbade Ben from getting to know Luke on a personal level. And in these stunning preview pages, Luke’s flight across Beggar’s Canyon doesn’t go quite as smoothly as he predicted.
There are currently rumors that Disney and Lucasfilm are considering a potential Obi-Wan Kenobi movie or movies with Ewan McGregor reprising his role from the prequels. After seeing these pages, that prospect suddenly becomes a lot more interesting. Whether it ever actually happens remains to be seen, but at least McGregor contributed a vocal cameo to Star Wars: The Force Awakens!
For Star Wars # 15, regular series writer Jason Aaron will be joined by guest artist, Mike Mayher, who also drew and painted that striking cover of middle-age Obi-Wan. Star Wars # 15 will be released on Wednesday, January 20.
