Remember when we told you about the runaway bride who was arrested for stealing $17,000 from her man’s bachelor party fund? Well we have another gold-digging bride, and this time a lot more money is in the discussion.
A man named Jin Dong (yep, that’s his last name), is suing his ex, Yu Qing Weng and her parents after she left him at the altar — but not before taking $287,000 in cash and gifts from him. Dong and Weng immigrated to New York from China, and were soon engaged in 2016, with a planned ceremony for January 2017. And in exchange for the promise to legally marry him and in the custom of his native country, Dong” paid the six figures for the wedding costs and gifts,” according to a Manhattan Supreme Court lawsuit.
The Manhattan resident spent $55,833 on the venue, $3,300 for wedding photos, $1,800 for a master of ceremonies, $4,000 for a wedding procession, and $1,000 for the cake. Additionally he paid his future parents-in-law a $63,000 cash dowry. Another $5,300 “gift of appreciation” went to his mother-in-law. The bride’s brother and grandmother each received $2,000 — “all in anticipation of the contemplated legal marriage,” the suit says.
Weng herself got $110,000 in cash and “exquisite betrothal gold jewelry valued at approximately $40,000,” according to court papers. The couple enjoyed the sumptuous banquet, but then Weng dragged her feet when it came time to legally wed Dong in a civil ceremony, the suit says. In August, she “left the home she shared with Jin Dong, never to return,” according to the legal filing.
“Weng took all of the money and jewelry she received in anticipation of the contemplated marriage with her when she left,” the suit says.
That sure is a lot of money to hand off just to get married.
Dong now thinks the whole wedding was a sham simply for his bride-to-be and her family to take his money. Um, you think?
According to the court papers, “Yu Qing Weng never intended to legally marry the plaintiff.” Yep, that sounds about right. Dong is suing for all his money back. No word yet if he will request a last name change now that he’s in a courtroom.
