Let’s hope they at least gave him extra sausage or a napkin autographed by Peyton Manning.
According to Quartz, May 22, 2018 marked the eight-year anniversary of Laszlo Hanyecz purchasing two large Papa John’s pizzas worth about $30 at the time using bitcoins. Their value today would be more in the $82 million range. That’s more than $4 million per slice for those who are refusing to do math on this glorious afternoon.
Of course, it’s much more glorious for a Bitcointalk user known only as “jercos,” who took Hanyecz up on his offer of 10,000 bitcoins in exchange for two large pizzas. Here’s his post from that fateful day, May 22, 2010, a day that is now known to the masses as “Bitcoin Pizza Day.”
I’ll pay 10,000 bitcoins for a couple of pizzas.. like maybe 2 large ones so I have some left over for the next day. I like having left over pizza to nibble on later. You can make the pizza yourself and bring it to my house or order it for me from a delivery place, but what I’m aiming for is getting food delivered in exchange for bitcoins where I don’t have to order or prepare it myself, kind of like ordering a ‘breakfast platter’ at a hotel or something, they just bring you something to eat and you’re happy!
Just for some context: How To Get Started With Cryptocurrency
For his part, Hanyecz seems to be taking it like a champ eight years later. In fact, he used 0.00649 of a bitcoin to purchase two pizzas in February this year in an effort to show the world that bitcoin could “remain a viable payment system with the addition of the Lightning Network.”
In a related story, if somebody wants to send me 10,000 bitcoins, I’ll order them three pizzas. Let me know.
