Schools are getting more inclusive by the day. Just take Jane Addams Elementary for example. The quiet little schoolhouse nestled in the Moline-Coal Valley School District is hosting its first-ever Satan Club. (Feel free to throw up some devil horns ya’ll.)
For some reason, the after-school program organized by the Satanic Temple is drawing the wrath of parents. And while concerned citizens have every right to worry about what their kids get up to after class, the devil is in the details.
As it turns out, the Satan Club has nothing to do with the devil’s work at all. (Damn.) In fact, the Temple, founded in 2012, never even believed in Lucifer. (Sorry guys, lower your devil horns.) And the only reason they created the after-school service was to provide an alternative to an evangelical program called the Good News Club.
The GNC, currently operating in 4,000 schools across America, has been telling sinful preschoolers they deserve to die and go to hell for about 80 years. (So, you know, a safe environment for children and Facebook mom groups alike.)
With this in mind, the club’s program, which requires a parent’s signature to attend, has been defended by the school board who said:
“The Moline-Coal Valley School District understands that there is concern and confusion over an upcoming after-school club at Jane Addams elementary…the district does not discriminate against any groups who wish to rent our facilities, including religious-affiliated groups.”
In other words, Satan Club is more than just a catchy name. It’s an open environment for kids and parents alike to engage in science-based “self-driven activities that the participants are interested in.” AKA redemption from the religious indoctrination programs that have haunted public schools for nearly a century.
Amen to that.
