Meanwhile in Russia: Video of Man Chaining Himself to McDonald’s to Save It From Closing Is Saddest Person of the Year

Major world events, like war, make us realize what’s truly important. For most people, that’d probably mean family and freedom. For others, it’s Big Macs and french fries. That’s all we can conclude after seeing a truly ridiculous video of a Russian man who chained himself to a McDonald’s in an attempt to prevent its closing.

Luka Safronov was not lovin’ it – and by “it” we mean the invasion of Ukraine and the domino effect of business closures in his homeland. Mickey D’s alone is shuttering 850 restaurants in Russia.

As fellow fast-food fans scrambled to get their last taste of American chain’s burgers and fries, Safronov chained himself to the door of the eatery in protest.

“Closing down is an act of hostility against me and my fellow citizens!” he yelled.

Unfortunately, his act of resistance didn’t do much good. Police escorted him away from the property, and we know for sure there’s no Golden Arches in prison. Even if he doesn’t end up behind bars, it could be a long time before Safronov tastes a McRib or a Shamrock Shake again.

“At this juncture, it’s impossible to predict when we might be able to reopen our restaurants in Russia,” McDonald’s president and CEO Chris Kempckinski wrote in a statement. “We are experiencing disruptions to our supply chain along with other operational impacts. We will also closely monitor the humanitarian situation.”

Maybe Safronov should take this opportunity to reconsider his relationship to McDonald’s. Based on looks alone, we’d guess he goes there way too often.
