If you thought affordable housing was just another empty promise politicians use to get elected in big cities, think again. Affordable housing has officially come to the most unlikely of places: Silicon Valley.
A startup based in the San Francisco Bay Area is now offering bunk bed pods for rent – at the low, low price of $800 a month! The beds are located in a three-bedroom home with two bathrooms where residents will share space with up to 13 people.
What other amenities might you expect in such an arrangement? Well, apparently the pods come “fully equipped” with modern conveniences like electrical outlets, shelves for books, clothes and laundry racks, plant or decoration hooks, and black privacy curtains. Talk about bang for your buck!
And just look how cozy you could make your little corner (literally) of the world:
Brownstone Shared Housing is the group advertising the accommodations across Palo Alto, likely catering to Stanford University students, tech employees, and other freelance workers. We assume it is trying to attract transient pod dwellers, as evidenced by its month-to-month leases and zero security deposit.
If you’re wondering why anyone would drop $800 for such insignificant square footage, consider this: Palo Alto is one of the most expensive American cities to live in. RentCafe estimates that the average 881-square-foot apartment rental there is a whopping $3,468 a month! That’s over twice the cost of the national average for similar living space.
Still, it’s going to take some convincing for people to get into this idea.
One Redditor who shared a (less charming) pic of the place exclaimed, “The dystopian future we’ve all been asking for is here! Unbelievable!”
“I’ve lived like that….on a warship,” one commenter shared. “That’s not a home.”
“That’s some submariner bullshit there,” someone else agreed.
“Why don’t they just force us to hot bunk while we’re at it to save even MORE money??” another wondered. “Share your pod with someone who works the night shift now!”
Hey, don’t give the housing overlords any bright ideas!
Even if it does qualify as affordable housing, we won’t be hopping into bed in one of these pods anytime soon. It’s all a little too Squid Game for us…
