Canadians who live in Hollywood will now have the chance to be recognized by their home country – the Golden Maple Awards will honour actors and athletes who are Canadian-blooded but live in Tinseltown.
The Academy of Canadians in Sports and Entertainment, an organization that was created earlier this year for Canadians living in Hollywood, made the announcement of the new Golden Maple Awards on Wednesday. Celeb ambassadors include Kathleen Robertson (“Murder in the First”) as well as Suzanne Clement, a star of Xavier Dolan’s film “Mommy,” which was recently selected as Canada’s entry in the Best Foreign Language Film category at the Oscars.
The awards will be handed out next June.
“Canadian talent in Hollywood has flown under the radar for far too long. The British have BAFTA-LA events, and were well represented at the Emmys. With the Golden Maple Awards, we will be reminding Tinseltown that Canada has just as strong contenders as the rest of the world,” said Evelyne Morrisseau, ACISE-LA executive director, to The Hollywood Reporter.
The categories of awards and voting will begin in early 2015, according to reports, and nominees will be chosen by members of the Academy of Canadians in Sports and Entertainment. A venue for the awards will also be announced at a later date.
