What do you think of when you envision potato chips? At first, likely plain, salted, crispy potato chips (or crisps if you’re in Europe). What about when you think about your favorite chips? Maybe you’re a fan of sweet barbecue-flavored chips, sour cream, and onion, or even tangy, salt, and vinegar. On top of those iconic flavors, there seem to be countless other varieties made by countless brands. Take a stroll down your local grocery store snack aisle if you don’t believe us. What you probably won’t see, however, are horse meat, maggot cheese, or poison blowfish. That is unless you manage to get your hands on a bag of Illegal Chips.
These extremely limited-edition potato snacks are made by MSCHF. If that name doesn’t ring a bell, perhaps you remember the “Satan” blood sneakers from their collaboration with Lil Nas X that went viral a few months ago. For those unaware (and potentially still confused by the bloody sneakers), MSCHF is a Brooklyn-based art collective that is known to make bold social statements using products, artwork, photography, and social media.
The idea for these new potato chips came when the brand wanted to highlight the government and the ways it stops people from eating certain things. If you didn’t know it already, horse meat, maggot cheese, and poison blowfish are all illegal to eat in the United States.
The chip flavors are horse meat, Casu Marzu (maggot-filled cheese), and fugu (poison blowfish that you might remember from ‘The Simpsons’). While we think these flavors are intriguing and we’re all for MSCHF’s artistic endeavors, we’ll just stick to our classic salt and vinegar chips.
