Runway | Todd Snyder: Spring/Summer 2016

Last week, Tokyo Fashion Week opened with a show by American designer, Todd Snyder. Just a guy from Iowa who honed his design skills at Ralph Lauren, J. Crew and the Gap, Snyder has quickly become a favorite of Japanese men. The unlikely Iowa-Japan combination has started to play out as a very profitable one for the 47-year-old designer. Initially flying under the radar, Snyder is now nearing rock star status in the world of fashion.

Though there’s no shortage of talent in Japan, the street-style inspiration we are used to seeing via the style bloggers, columnists and fashionistas have yet to make their way to stores, thus leaving the market wide open for Snyder to step in – and he hasn’t missed a beat.

The Spring/Summer 2016 collection presented by Snyder consisted of muted blue-greys, white, and camp green. Suiting was a consistent focal point, matching tailored looks with more relaxed pieces, like classic dress shorts paired with mid-length trench coats. Suit jackets with tonal lapels offered a contrast to the usual men’s classic, creating an interesting look that can be worn for business as well as casual occasions. 

In addition to the perfectly cut trench coats, models also wore Kobicha and Clay colored baseball jackets, a Taupe leather jacket and a camouflage jacket (the only printed coat in the collection). Snyder makes even reconstructed jeans look polished by matching it with a crisp white button-up shirt, black vest and black suit jacket, making even the most style-shy guy look like a fashion veteran. Many of the models walked the catwalk in black oxfords, with one white pair included, creating a fresh all-white ensemble.

In essence, this season’s collection has a piece or two that every man can appreciate whether its a stripe, plaid or even a sporty raglan tee. If you like these looks and find yourself in the Land of the Rising Sun, Snyder opened a three-story concept store in the Shibuya district of Tokyo just last year.
