Imagine this, It’s the middle of the night, you’re a sergeant in a U.S. Army special operations unit and doing a routine training exercise in the middle of the California desert. Everything is going to plan and nothing is weird. That is, until a man emerges from the darkness and not just any man, but a ninja holding a katana.
The ninja slowly and effortlessly whispers into the darkness so that you can just barely hear him, “Do you know who I am?” You shake your head no. The ninja then asks you, “Do you know where my family is?” When you state that you don’t know where they are the ninja begins slashing at you with his sword.
This bizarre interaction sounds like it could be from a film, but it occurred in real life. 35-year-old Gino Rivera snuck onto Inyokern Airport in Kern County, north of Los Angeles where he terrorized members of the 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment (SOAR). The sergeant immediately took off running, climbed a fence, and reached a building where he joined members of his company. Together, he and a captain secured the facility and called 911.
Of course, Rivera, a ninja, couldn’t let his victim slip away. He chased the sergeant to the building where he kicked and punched doors and windows, according to the report from the Kern County Sheriff’s Station. In addition to slashing at the sergeant’s leg, the ninja threw a rock through a hangar window, hitting an additional victim in the head.
Sheriffs deputies tracked down Rivera who refused to comply with their demands so they used nonlethal rounds to subdue him. However, this didn’t work and deputies opted for something more effective and tased Rivera. This finally did the trick.
