Playing Tetris Can Improve Mental Health, Experts Say Good Distraction From Dystopian Reality

We all need ways to decompress during this never-ending pandemic. (Cue overeating, day drinking, binge-watching, and excessive masturbation.) But these coping methods hurt as much as they help. (Especially the masturbation. Holy chafing, Batman!)

Now, experts are saying one of your favorite pastimes — playing video games — is actually good for you. Tetris, that block-building brain boggler, has been deemed an effective tension reliever.

“There is something symbolic about things coming at you, or things that seem ill-fitting that you are trying to organize and compartmentalize,” psychotherapist Dana Dorfman told the New York Post. “We are trying to internalize obstacles and make some order of them so we can continue to maintain our own equilibrium.”

The mental health perks also apply to construction games like Minecraft and RollerCoaster Tycoon…as long as you play in moderation. (Easier said than done, we know.)

So the next time you’re feeling anxious or unmoored about the latest iteration of Covid-19, feel free to indulge in a little gaming…just don’t forget to come back to reality, no matter how terribly dystopian it may be.
