Meanwhile in Massachusetts: Moms Gather in Giant Field For a Good Scream, Ever Heard of Alcohol, Ladies?

Parenting is tough. We don’t blame anyone tasked with raising children for taking the edge off by any means necessary. A technique to blow off steam used by a group of moms in Massachusetts, however, is a little odd.

Therapist Sarah Harmon recently brought together a group of local moms in a massive field. But they weren’t there to kick a soccer ball around or run laps. They were there for a screaming session.

“I was educating them about anger and how underneath anger there’s so many more emotions — there’s sadness, there’s anxiety, there’s fear, there’s resentment — and they had no place to put it,” she told TODAY. “Moms were at home and not in community, and just struggling.”

This wasn’t the first time the ladies gathered en masse to let it all out. A previous session was held in March of 2021, and there was so much demand to do it again, Harmon planned an encore.

This time, the session was structured. Using a light-up unicorn as a prop, Harmon cued everyone to start off with a regular scream. Then, they moved onto profanities. For the next part, the moms indulged with a “free for all” scream where they could get as creative as they wanted to. They then screamed in honor of all those who couldn’t. Finally, they concluded with a contest to see who could scream the most.

“I think it’s the body’s intuition to release,” Harmon told TODAY. “Emotions move through us when we allow them to and rage is something we all know. We can feel it and it’s such an emotion that’s often taboo, especially for women.”

Harmon hopes her story will encourage other moms to grab a bestie and let it out – somewhere safe, obviously, lest they disturb the peace and get arrested. Rather than risk going to jail for a noise disturbance, why not just hit up a local watering hole for bottomless margaritas? Seems like the more pleasurable option to us…
