Witness Swarm of Bees Erupt During Cricket Match, Finally Somebody Making Cricket Watchable

To the untrained eye, cricket looks exactly like a half-dressed hockey team attempting to play baseball with whatever sports equipment was left in the lost and found at the YMCA’s senior annex. For most Americans, our knowledge of cricket begins and ends with the paddle Ben Affleck used to haze freshmen in Richard Linklater’s Dazed and Confused. Despite our profound lack of interest in this confusing pastime, cricket is the second most popular sport in the world.

Unless you’re a bee. In that case, cricket has always been and will always be number one. We know this because a swarm of bees descended upon a professional cricket match in New Zealand, dropping players like flies as they buzzed onto the pitch to get a good look at the action.

You have to see it to bee-lieve it:

Of course, it’s not the first time a swarm of bees has come to watch a cricket match. In 2017 a heated match between South Africa and Sri Lanka was attended by a massive killer drone that shut the fun down until a bunch of beekeepers came to the rescue. Then again in 2019, a championship rematch brought out what many believe to be the same swarm of bees hoping for a South African upset.

As for this sizzling matchup, returning champs Canterbury spanked Wellington on their own turf, winning by 294 runs. The swarm of bees definitely added to the excitement of the skirmish, but not enough for us to watch all four days of action. If they ever get a stampede of rhinos to attend though, we’re all in.
