Meanwhile in Ohio: Mayor Declares Ice Fishing Leads to Prostitution (Only Similarity We See Are the Holes, Mr. Mayor)

Question: What do ice fishing and hookers have in common? Answer: The holes? That’s all we can figure after hearing that Craig Shubert, the mayor of Hudson, Ohio, claimed ice fishing would lead to prostitution.

His proclamation came during a recent city council meeting. He stated that allowing ice fishing at a local park would lure ladies of the night into the area.

“Does someone come back next year and say I want an ice shanty on Hudson Springs Park for X amount of time?” Shubert said during the meeting. “And if you then allow ice fishing with shanties, then that leads to another problem. Prostitution. Now you’ve got the police chief and the police department involved.”

These asinine comments went viral (of course they did) and Shubert was mercilessly dragged on social media.

Shubert later clarified that his comments “were made out of concern for our community; what could become of unintended consequences of new legislation, based on my prior television news reporting experience.”

(Pro-tip: if you have to explain your comments after the fact, you’re probably full of shit.)

To add insult to injury, he added: “My attempt to inject a bit of dry humor to make a point about this, in the midst of a cold, snowy February, was grossly misunderstood.”

Now that’s an understatement. Know what’s no joke? As a result of the backlash, Shubert actually ended up resigning. As for the ice fishing measure? It was approved. Locals expect a record amount of ice fishing licenses to be processed this year.

If the shanty’s a-rockin’, don’t come a-knockin’…
