If you’re a fan of baseball, the odds are you’re very aware of the “bullpen”. You know, the place where the relief pitchers hang out during the game, waiting to be told to warm up before replacing the pitcher on the mound. While you’re aware of the term, you probably never thought of it as remotely offensive. We’re assuming that this is because you don’t work for PETA. Otherwise, you likely find it extremely offensive and hurtful to bovines and want the name removed immediately and replaced with a different one.
Before we continue, it should be noted that not only is this not an April fool’s joke, the folks at PETA are very serious about their stance. The animal rights group wants Major League Baseball to rename the area of the stadium few of us even think about it from “bullpen” to “arm barn” as if that’s any better.
“Bullpen” refers to the area of a “bull’s pen” where bulls are held before they are slaughtered—it’s a word with speciesist roots & we can do better than that.

Their idea is that a “bullpen” is a reference to the place where bulls are kept before they get slaughtered. In a Twitter post, they added, “it’s a word with speciesist roots & we can do better than that.”
Honestly, while we don’t think it’s a great idea to change things just for the sake of it, but “arm barn” is actually kind of funny. We’d love to hear an announcer say “Aroldis Chapman is warming up in the arm barn. But, honestly, in a world where Braves fans are still doing the infamous “tomahawk chop”, this doesn’t seem to be as big of a deal.
